Long-Term Grid Down

When the lights don't come back on

Probability: HighSeverity: SevereDays to monthsUpdated April 18, 2026

Overview

A long-term power grid failure — caused by cyberattack, physical infrastructure attack, cascading failure, extreme weather, or solar storm — is considered by many experts to be one of the most likely large-scale disasters. The US power grid is aging and vulnerable. A grid-down event lasting weeks or months would disable water treatment, food distribution, medical care, communications, and heating/cooling. The elderly and those on medical equipment are at immediate risk. Society begins to break down within days.

Warning Signs

Widespread outage affecting multiple states, government statements about infrastructure attacks, extreme weather forecasts for major grids.

Immediate Actions (First 24 Hours)

  • Conserve device battery power — charge everything immediately when power fluctuates
  • Fill bathtubs and every available container with water immediately
  • Inventory all food and begin rationing — stores will empty within 24 hours
  • Disconnect sensitive electronics from outlets to protect from power surges on restoration
  • Contact elderly neighbors and vulnerable family members immediately
  • Establish home security plan — looting begins within 48–72 hours of grid failure

Short-Term Preparation

  • Install a solar + battery backup system for critical home circuits
  • Acquire a generator with 30+ day fuel supply and fuel stabilizer
  • Store 30-day minimum food supply requiring no refrigeration
  • Install a wood stove or propane heater as backup heat
  • Have a manual water pump or large water storage
  • Stock candles, oil lamps, and battery/solar lighting

Long-Term Preparation

  • Install a full off-grid solar system capable of powering your home
  • Build a root cellar for food storage without electricity
  • Develop a rainwater collection and purification system
  • Install a wood stove as primary heat source
  • Acquire a chest freezer as more efficient than upright (matters during rationing)
  • Build 1-year food supply not requiring refrigeration

Essential Gear

  • Solar panels + battery bank + inverter
  • Generator with fuel (stabilized diesel or propane)
  • Wood stove or propane backup heater
  • Manual water pump or large water storage (55-gallon drums)
  • Battery and solar lighting system
  • Chest freezer (most efficient storage when power is intermittent)
  • Propane camp stove with large propane supply

Key Skills

  • Basic electrical and solar system maintenance
  • Food preservation without refrigeration
  • Water collection and purification
  • Home heating without electricity
  • Generator maintenance and fuel management
  • Community security organization

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Relying on a generator without adequate fuel storage
  • Not having manual backups for every electrical system
  • Storing food that requires refrigeration as your primary supply
  • Ignoring home security planning
  • Not practicing living without power before a crisis
