EMP / Solar Flare
The silent attack that ends the electronic age
Overview
An Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) — whether from a nuclear detonation at altitude or a powerful solar coronal mass ejection (CME) — can simultaneously destroy unshielded electronics across entire continents. Modern civilization runs on electronics. Power grids, water treatment, food distribution, banking, communications, vehicles — all are vulnerable. The 1859 Carrington Event was a natural CME that, if it occurred today, would cause an estimated $2 trillion in damage. A nuclear EMP attack (a single warhead detonated 30 miles above the continental US) could render 90% of electronics inoperable.
Warning Signs
Unusual aurora activity visible at low latitudes, government warnings about solar activity, or a brief flash followed by complete electronic failure.
Immediate Actions (First 24 Hours)
- Do not use electronic devices — assume they are fried
- Retrieve stored water immediately before treatment plants fail
- Do not use vehicles made after 1975 — most will be disabled
- Get to your Bug-Out Location or shelter-in-place immediately
- Account for all family members — communications will be down
- Secure your home — social order will deteriorate within 72 hours
Short-Term Preparation
- Build or buy a Faraday cage to protect critical electronics (radio, phone, solar charge controller)
- Store printed copies of all critical documents, maps, and technical manuals
- Acquire a pre-1975 vehicle or keep spare parts in a Faraday cage
- Stock 90+ days of food and water
- Acquire a hand-crank or solar emergency radio
- Learn to operate without electronics for all daily tasks
Long-Term Preparation
- Install a whole-home EMP shield or critical system protection
- Build a fully off-grid homestead not dependent on grid power
- Develop community mutual aid network — survival will be communal
- Learn low-tech skills: blacksmithing, animal husbandry, seed saving, hand tools
- Acquire solar power system with EMP-hardened components stored in Faraday protection
- Store 1+ year of food — grid recovery could take years
Essential Gear
- ▸Faraday cage / EMP bags for critical electronics
- ▸Hand-crank emergency radio (stored in Faraday)
- ▸Pre-1975 diesel vehicle or backup ignition parts
- ▸Manual water pump and filtration
- ▸Non-electric lighting (oil lamps, candles, solar lanterns)
- ▸Manual tools for all home and farm tasks
- ▸1+ year food supply with manual cooking capability
Key Skills
- ▸Operating without electronics for all daily needs
- ▸Navigation by map and compass
- ▸Manual food production and preservation
- ▸Basic mechanics on old vehicle platforms
- ▸HAM radio operation (store radio in Faraday)
- ▸Community organization and leadership
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Thinking a microwave or metal box is an adequate Faraday cage (it's not — test it)
- Relying on a modern vehicle to bug out after EMP
- Underestimating how quickly civil order breaks down without power
- Not having printed manuals and maps — all digital info will be inaccessible
- Preparing alone — an EMP scenario requires community to survive long-term
